Who

Richard Fawcus is a writer, researcher, and art-activist, with interests in monuments, dissonant heritage, tourism, video games, and neurodiversity. Since 2011, he has also published under the pen name Darmon Richter.

He holds a BSc in Psychology from The Open University (2011, 1st class), and a PhD in Heritage and Tourism (University of Central Lancashire, 2022). This research investigated ‘the precarious fate of communist monuments in post-communist space,’ and helped secure significant conservation funding.

Richard has consulted on archival and documentary work, television/film productions, events planning, tourism development, and conservation projects. His writing on architecture, place, and heritage has appeared in The Verge, Hidden Europe, Atlas Obscura, The Modernist, and The Calvert Journal. Meanwhile, his documentary photography has been exhibited across six countries, including at the Venice Architecture Bienalle.

After 15 years lived mostly between Bulgaria and Ukraine, Richard is now based in the UK. Alongside his ongoing research, he is currently pursuing an MA in Creative Practice at the Make Happen Institute in Bristol.
